In November 2013, the University of Pennsylvania hosted a major interdisciplinary conference on innovation in India. The conference, “India as a Pioneer of Innovation: Constraints and Opportunities,” brought together academic experts and business, government, and other influential leaders from around the world to further our understanding of innovation in India, and its implications for world affairs. Professor Devesh Kapur, CASI Director, and CASI affiliates participated including Dr. Marshall M. Bouton, CASI Senior Fellow, member of the CASI International Advisory Board, and President Emeritus, Chicago Council on Global Affairs; Professor Shyamkrishna Balganesh of Penn Law and member of CASI’s Faculty Advisory Committee; Dr. T. Sundararaman, Executive Director, National Health Systems Resource Centre and CASI Spring 2012 Visiting Scholar; and one of the keynote speakers, Arvind Subramanian, Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Development, and member of the CASI International Advisory Board. Other keynote speakers were Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the Prime Minister of India and Chairman of the National Innovation Council; Chanda Kochhar, Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank, India’s largest private bank; and Kanwal Rekhi, Managing Director of Inventus Capital Partners and the first Indian-American Founder and CEO to IPO on NASDAQ. The conference was hosted at the University of Pennsylvania’s campus in Philadelphia on November 14-15, 2013 and continued at Wharton|San Francisco on November 18, 2013.
