Garware Technical Fibres Excellence Fellowships, 2024-25

The University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India (UPIASI) in Delhi is a research institution that strives to build scholarship on contemporary social, political, and economic issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. Since 1997, we have strived to provide a platform for scholars worldwide to create meaningful partnerships for research on India’s present-day developments and challenges.

The Garware Technical Fibres Excellence Postdoctoral Fellowship, based in UPIASI’s New Delhi office, offers young scholars with recently completed PhDs, an opportunity to pursue independent research projects on topics of contemporary India. In addition, research fellows will benefit from access to top-tier resources such as UPenn’s e-library, a dedicated research fund, and an opportunity to be a part of our vast scholarly network to support their research.

The candidate will be reporting to Dr. Eswaran Sridharan, Academic Director, and Chief Executive of UPIASI. Dr. Sridharan is a political scientist with research interests in elections, party systems and coalition politics, political economy of development, international relations theory, and Indian foreign policy. He is the Editor-in-Chief of India Review, a refereed Routledge journal, and is on the Editorial Advisory Board of Commonwealth and Comparative Politics. He earned his Ph.D. in political science at the University of Pennsylvania.

Details of the program:

  1. The fellowship is for the social sciences, covering but not limited to UPIASI’s core research verticals including Political System and Governance, International Relations & Foreign Policy, Economic Development & Social Change, Environment and Sustainability.
  2. The fellowship begins on October 1, 2024, for a term of 1 year, extendable to 2 years subject to research plans and funding.
  3. Fellows will be eligible to receive a stipend of INR 1,00,000/- per month subject to TDS. An additional grant of INR 1,50,000/- to cover research related expenses subject to submission of receipts.
  4. Subject to availability of funds, the fellows may have the opportunity to visit the University of Pennsylvania, participate in campus events and interact with faculty.
  5. As an extension of their appointment, the fellows will be considered non-resident scholars at the Centre for Advanced Study of India (CASI), UPenn and have access to Penn online resources.
  6. Fellows will have to submit progress reports of their research twice a year including a final manuscript of their research at the end of the fellowship period and will need to acknowledge UPIASI and the donor in any book or journal article or edited volume chapter emerging out of the fellowship grant. Although, as per academic practice, they will be free to publish at their own discretion.
  7. Fellows will be involved in organising and curating academic discussions around contemporary topics, including those aligned with UPIASI's research expertise.
  8. Fellows will be encouraged to contribute short write-ups/articles/ essays on their research themes to be featured on the UPIASI website.
