C. Raja Mohan

Dr. C. Raja Mohan is at CASI as a Penn Distinguished International Scholar. He is the Head of Strategic Studies and a Distinguished Fellow at Observer Research Foundation, New Delhi. His area of expertise is in India’s Foreign and Defence policies, Asian Security, Arms Control & Disarmament, and the Impact of Rising Powers on the Global Order.

Georgette Rochlin

Georgette Rochlin is the Deputy Director of the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) in the School of Arts and Sciences.

In her role, Georgette supports the Center’s goals through strategic planning, financial management, and program development. She oversees the Center’s annual budget and sponsored research portfolio. She also contributes to CASI’s campus activities including strategic communications, workshops, conferences, and special projects. 

Juliana Di Giustini

Juliana Di Giustini is the Executive Director of the Center for the Advanced Study of India. She has over three decades of executive and managerial level experience in for-profit technology startups, non-profit organizations, and higher education.

Alan Atchison

Alan Atchison is the Head of Communications at the Center for the Advanced Study of India. Previously, he served as CASI's Senior Publications Editor (2016-23) and Online Editor (2008-16).

Support Services for CASI

UPIASI helps support CASI’s activities in India, including administering payments for CASI’s research project fieldwork, India in Transition online article series, etc.; research assistance for CASI projects; travel and stay arrangements for Indian visiting fellows and conference participants to CASI; facilitation arrangements for Penn students interning with Indian NGOs as part of CASI projects; office facilities for the CASI Director and other visitors from Penn.

Publications

Over the past 28 years, 1997-2025, UPIASI has carried out over two dozen multi-year research projects, held 22 conferences, and published a total of 13 books, with 2 more in the pipeline due in 2024, 2 special issues of refereed journals, and over 267 papers written by 164 scholars from 112 institutions – including Penn, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Chicago, Berkeley, Michigan, Wisconsin, NYU, Johns Hopkins – in the United States, and JNU, Delhi University, Jamia Mil

Programs & Activities

Since 1997, UPIASI’s portfolio of activities has grown to comprise over a dozen research projects and two fellowship programs. A cumulative total of 126 scholars from 78 institutions across India, USA, Canada, UK, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and Israel have contributed over 190 papers for the various UPIASI projects, most of which have been published in ten edited volumes and two guest-edited special issues of refereed journals.
