This project plans to examine the interactive dynamics of economic integration and security competition/cooperation of India in the larger Asian and Indian Ocean region, factoring in the roles of global powers, and global and emerging regional regimes. The larger question will be: will neo-liberal institutionalism driven by economic integration prevail over the competition for security and power expected by neorealist theory in an Asia and world in which US unipolarity will come under increasing challenge (by China, Russia, Iran, etc.), and what the implications for India’s development and foreign policy will be? The project, undertaken over 2013-15 and supported by the Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust, will consist of a set of fieldwork-based papers on India’s relations with a range of Asian countries and on India’s relationship with the emerging Asian economic, political and security architecture.
