Naveen Bharathi

Naveen Bharathi, currently at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CASI from 2020-22. His research interests lie at the intersection of political sociology and political economy of identity in India. Specifically, his research explores the relationship between ethnic diversity and development, most broadly conceived. He has written about issues ranging from the relationship between ethnic diversity and public goods provisioning to spatial segregation in contemporary urban India.

Tariq Thachil is the Director of CASI, Professor of Political Science at Penn, and the Madan Lal Sobti Professor for the Study of Contemporary India. He began his directorship July 1, 2020.

As India struggles to flatten the COVID-19 curve, Muslims in India are fighting a spike in anti-Muslim hatred, a sentiment that has long since been there but has drastically intensified during the pandemic. Physical attacks on Muslims, the barring of their entry into colonies and villages, and exhortations not to do business with them have been reported all over the country.
