Join the University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India (UPIASI), Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI), Penn Global, and Penn Alumni for a one-hour virtual conversation with Dr. Eswaran Sridharan, Academic Director and Chief Executive of the University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India (UPIASI), rooted in his extensive research on electoral politics in India.

Co-moderated by Dr. Tariq Thachil, Director of the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI), Associate Professor of Political Science and Madan Lal Sobti Associate Professor for the Study of Contemporary India, and Ramanan Raghavendran, Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and Chair of the Governing Council, UPIASI, the main thrust of the discussion centers around electoral trends and party systems, covering the 2019 elections, rise of Modi, and of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

This discussion also provides an opportunity to learn more about UPIASI, CASI’s counterpart institution based in Delhi, with a strong and growing research program led by Dr. Sridharan.


About the Penn in India Faculty Speaker Series:
The Penn in India: Faculty Speaker Series aims to highlight the wide range of research conducted by Penn faculty in India and engage the Penn community in intimate conversations on a broad range of topics. During each session, Penn faculty engage in a 60-minute virtual, moderated discussion about their work covering a wide range of research interests, from the urban studies and politics, to behavioral economics and health, to online education. The Faculty Speaker Series is sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India (UPIASI), Penn Global, and Penn Alumni. These events are geared toward the Penn alumni community in India; however, members of the wider Penn and academic communities are always welcome.

The Nand & Jeet Khemka Distinguished Lecture Series is an endowed public program of the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI). Launched in the 2007-08 academic year, and made possible through the generous support of the Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation, the series brings renowned India specialists to the Penn community and serves as a critical forum for analyzing and understanding the complex economic, political, social, and cultural changes that the world’s largest democracy is experiencing, as well as the challenges that lie ahead.
The Saluja Global Fellows Program has been made possible by the generous gift from Vishal Saluja ENG’89 W’89. CASI was excited to launch the program during the 2022–23 academic year, coinciding with the Center’s 30th Anniversary. This new program enables CASI to invite eminent leaders and rising experts on contemporary India preferably from the fields of media, culture, law, and contemporary history to be in residence for one to two weeks at CASI.
