Nikhil Anand Becomes First Associate Faculty Director of CASI
On July 1, 2023, Nikhil Anand (Daniel Braun Silvers and Robert Peter Silvers Family Presidential Professor of Anthropology; Director, Penn Envirolab) became the first Associate Faculty Director of CASI. Anand will serve a range of roles that will help broaden CASI's intellectual mission and reinforce its role in the wider university. These activities include expanding CASI’s research into new areas, mentoring students participating in CASI Student Programs, hosting scholars, policymakers, and practitioners on campus, and organizing events and activities in India.
Anand's appointment was announced by Penn Arts & Sciences on July 3, 2023 in an article by Blake Cole.

CASI in the News
CASI Postdoctoral Research Fellow Sarath Pillai's new article, "German Lessons: Comparative Constitutionalism, States’ Rights, and Federalist Imaginaries in Interwar India," published in the July 2023 issue of Comparative Studies in Society and History, offers a new pathway to think about the history of Indian federalism and shows the impact of German ideas of state and sovereignty on the federal imaginations of Indian princely states and Muslim minorities in interwar India.
CASI Director Tariq Thachil's new book, Migrants and Machine Politics: How India's Urban Poor Seek Representation and Responsiveness (Princeton University Press, 2023), co-authored with CASI Non-Resident Visiting Scholar Adam Auerbach (American University), was featured in the June 26, 2023 issue of Penn Today.
