Meet Fall 2024 Visiting Scholar, Hilal Ahmed (Video)

Hilal Ahmed is an Associate Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), New Delhi. He works on political Islam, Indian democracy, and politics of symbols in South Asia. He is also a faculty member of the Lokniti program at CSDS. His latest book is A Brief History of the Present: Muslims in New India (Penguin-Random House, 2024).

CASI Fall 2024 Visiting Scholar Hilal Ahmed (Associate Professor, CSDS) published "Multiple Motives" in the November 11, 2024 issue of The Telegraph and co-authored (with Christophe Jaffrelot) "Indian Muslims: (Self-)Perceptions and Voting Trends in 2024" in the November 2024 issue of Studies in Indian Politics. Additionally, he had his book, A Brief History of the Present: Muslims in New India (Penguin-Random House, 2024) reviewed in "Muslims in New India: A Survival Story" (Asim Ali, Frontline, November 12, 2024).

CASI Postdoctoral Research Fellow Kiran Kumbhar published "The Indocentric Road Taken," in the November 20, 2024 issue of The India Forum, a review of a new book on Indian history, The Golden Road by William Dalrymple.


Apply to become a CASI Visiting Scholar/Fellow In-Residence

CASI’s Visiting Scholars/Fellows Program is designed to bring individuals to the University of Pennsylvania with different areas of expertise from academia, the bureaucracy and civil services, NGOs, and civil society (such as media). Scholars and fellows participate in CASI events; engage in scholarly research projects; present their research as a part of the CASI seminar series; and interact with undergraduate and graduate students, and Penn faculty. Fellowships are typically one to three months in duration. Fellows are invited to apply for the 2025-26 Academic Year (September 2025 to May 2026).
