Migrants and Machine Politics: How India's Urban Poor Seek Representation and Responsiveness (Princeton University Press, 2023) co-authored by CASI Director Tariq Thachil and CASI Non-Resident Visiting Scholar Adam Auerbach (SAIS, Johns Hopkins University) was recognized with three honors at the 2024 American Political Science Association (APSA) meetings in Philadelphia: the 2024 Giovanni Sartori Book Award from the Qualitative and Mixed-Methods Section; the 2024 Best Book award by APSA’s Experimental Research Section; and Honorable Mention for the Luebert Prize for Best Book in the Comparative Politics section.
Another CASI and Penn merit at APSA was the inaugural Francine Frankel Award from the South Asia Politics section, named after CASI’s Founding Director (1992-2006) and Professor Emerita of Political Science and South Asian Regional Studies at Penn.
CASI Postdoctoral Research Fellow Kiran Kumbhar published "What the Doctors’ Protests in India are Missing" in the September 16, 2024 issue of STATNews.
CASI Welcomes Fall 2024 Visiting Scholar, Hilal Ahmed
Hilal Ahmed is an Associate Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), New Delhi, where he works on political Islam, Indian democracy, and politics of symbols in South Asia. He is the author of Muslim Political Discourse in Postcolonial India: Monuments, Memory, Contestation (Routledge 2014), which explores these thematic concerns to evolve an interdisciplinary approach to study Muslim politics.

Samina Mishra is a documentary filmmaker, writer, and teacher based in New Delhi, with a special interest in media for and about children. Her work uses the lens of childhood, identity and education to reflect the experiences of growing up in India. She is a September 2024 Visiting Fellow with the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication at Annenberg School.
