Alibaba's Singles' Day sales hit record $38 billion

Chinese retailer Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s sales for its 24-hour Singles’ Day shopping blitz hit a record $38.4 billion, more than Amazon.com Inc’s haul last quarter from online sales. But sales growth for the festival eased to 26%, the weakest since 2009, held back by a slowing e-commerce industry in China as the country’s economic expansion heads toward a historic low.

How TN Seshan put India among the stars

As administrative director of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) in the 1970s, Seshan drafted the contract signed with SEP, a company that worked for French space agency CNES, to develop Vikas, India’s first liquid propulsion engine. Later in the day, she was shifted to the ICU and had to be put on life-support, sources said. “She is suffering from pneumonia along with left ventricular failure. She continues to be critical, but there has been some improvement in her condition over the last few hours,” said internal medicine physician, Dr Pratit Samdani.

Car, SUV sales snap 11 months of declines

70,000 BSNL staff opts for VRS, co hopes to save Rs 7,000 crore a year

BSNL CMD Pravin Kumar Purwar said around 70,000 workers have already accepted the VRS, and he expects more to opt in before the closing date of December 3. “We have given a handsome VRS package and are confident that our target of 80,000 people opting for VRS will be met,” Purwar told TOI. VRS acceptance at BSNL has exceeded government’s initial estimate of 58,000 employees.

VHP decides to construct Ram temple through crowd-funding

Industrial output posts steepest contraction in nearly eight years

Data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Monday showed the index of industrial production contracted 4.3% in September, the second successive month of decline after the fall of 1.4% in August and lower than the 4.6% expansion posted in the year earlier period. Between April and September, the sector grew an annual 1.3% compared with a 5.2% expansion in the year earlier period.

Stubble burning cases in Punjab cross 48,000 set to cross last year’s count
