Mathew Chemplayil

Mathew Chemplayil is a senior undergraduate at Penn's College of Arts and Sciences majoring in International Relations, South Asia Studies, and World History. He has been a research assistant at CASI since Fall 2021. In his time at CASI, he has assisted Dr. Thachil in geolocating Indian towns, developing a historical index of scholarly articles on South Asia, and completing other tasks as directed. Mathew is currently writing his senior thesis in International Relations, titled A Conundrum of Compliance: Why States Lift Sanctions on their Adversaries. This thesis qualitatively and quantitatively examines multiple high-profile cases of sanctions throughout history, including those imposed on India after the Pokhran-II nuclear tests.
